About Paulo: Paulo Fernando founded San Diego Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in 1997 when he arrived in San Diego. He has been teaching the San Diego Community for the last 23 years – 2000 to 2003 Mr. Fernando was the head coach for the Marine Corps in Camp Pendleton – 2000 to 2002 Mr. Fernando was the head coach for the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program at the Navy base on 32nd street – San Diego – Mr. Fernando is a 6th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Carlson Gracie Senior, IBJJF, FPJJ and a 6th Degree judo Black belt under IJF International Judo Federation, USA Judo, USJA Judo Mr. Fernando graduated International business at São Paulo State university in 1993. Full scholarship In judo.
More: Paulo Augusto was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1970 When he was only four years old Paulo saw a judo class at the YMCA and asked his mom to sign him up soon Paulo’s older brother, Carlos, and sister, Valeria, were practicing Judo as well. Paulo, the youngest of the three, loved going to judo classes and has never stopped.
Jiu-Jitsu Becomes New Passion Paulo’s love for the “Gentle art” led to quick success. He received his first-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1991 from Masters Otavio de Almeida Jr. and Roberto Moreira Lage. The second degree followed in 1996 3rd degree in 2002 and his 4th degree black belt from Carlson Gracie Senior November, 2005. Mr. Augusto, won several local, State and National Tournaments as well. From 1986 to 1997 Paulo was BJJ Sao Paulo State champion for 6 years, successfully competed in the prestigious 2nd and 4th Pan American Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments and, 1997 world Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament

No, not at all! We find that people start at varying fitness levels. But, you will find that you do get fit by doing our Encinitas martial arts classes. Isn’t that the point though? A fun workout that gets results!
All of our classes are open to all skill levels, beginner through advanced. We focus on the fundamentals of , which are simply the most effective parts of the art. We also do a lot of specific drilling and training, which teaches you how to apply techniques and movements during a “live” roll.
No, Competition is not for everyone. And, not all competitions are the same. It can be a good way for students to learn and test their skills, and strive for outstanding achievement. And it is important to be selective as to which competitions are entered. However, you will find that our experienced instructors can create that type of learning environment within the class.

Absolutely! Women really find that the benefits of doing martial arts training in is that they learn to protect themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent. Something they never thought was possible. We think ALL women should know how to protect themselves, especially on the ground!
Yes, initially some women find that the close training proximity might be a little uncomfortable. But don’t worry! We will ease you into it, and before long you will be feeling confident, powerful and really looking forward to your regular classes in Encinitas.
